Sofie was born on March 30, 2012. She was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia (her liver did not have bile ducts) when she was just a few days old. She went through her first surgery at just 18 days old. But the Kasai procedure failed and she needed a liver transplant at 5 months old.

To show appreciation to DMV personnel for their pivotal role in registering organ and eye donors here in North Carolina, our Ambassadors deliver a thank you card each quarter featuring stories of residents touched by donation. For the first quarter of 2014, donor mother Angie Mitchell wrote her own personal thank you to DMV Examiners for asking her son, Corey, if he would like to register as a donor at age 16. His selfless decision saved the lives of four others.

For most of Jamie's life, she only knew a dad whose complications from diabetes and a declining health led him to be placed on the national transplant waiting list. Just into its fourth year, our DMV Ambassador program provides an opportunity for those touched by donation and transplantation, whether personally or professionally, to give back to those who help to save lives each and every day: DMV Examiners. Four months into the pregnancy of their second child, Kip and Shannon Brooks discovered their little girl, the future Skylar Tianna, would not survive for long, if at all, after birth. After much prayer and research, the Brooks family brought Skylar into the world. She not only changed their lives forever but gave incredible gifts to more than 50 other families in need.

Jerry Smigelski, Jr. and his dad have many things in common, like most parents and their children. However, one of their connections is more unusual than most: both men are heart transplant recipients. Jerry's father had a heart transplant 15 years ago at the University of Michigan. Jerry followed suit, receiving his new heart at Duke University Hospital on October 4, 2010.
