Position Title: Executive Director                       

Direct Supervisor: Board of Directors    

Direct Reports: 1-2 Full Time Employees (currently 1.5); External Bookkeeping partner

FLSA Status: Exempt

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

 

PURPOSE

This position operates under general supervision of the Donate Life North Carolina (DLNC) Board of Directors (BOD). The Executive Director oversees the donor registry, executes the organization’s strategic plan, leads fundraising initiatives, and serves as a liaison with Donate Life America (DLA). Key responsibilities include the overall direction of public relations and community outreach, communication with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and strong support for staff and stakeholders. The Executive Director is responsible for compliance with all applicable state and federal guidelines, laws, and regulations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Organization Leadership
  • Develop and execute strategic plan to guide all organization activities and goals
  • Provide support and direction for staff and their respective projects
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with DMV leaders and staff
  • Maintain strong communication and collaboration with NC recovery organizations
  • Collaborate with recovery organizations on legislative affairs
  • Serve as media spokesperson or refer media requests to appropriate recovery organization or transplant center
  • Manage administration of DLNC, including establishing organizational policies and procedures and adherence to bylaws
  • Donor Registry
  • Manage the North Carolina Donor Registry online database
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all registry needs 24/7/365
  • Collaborate and communicate registry updates and outages to NC recovery organizations
  • Fundraising
  • Lead development initiatives to expand and diversify the organization’s funding
  • Write grant proposals for approval by the BOD
  • Coordinate fundraising activities with the BOD
  • Record and acknowledge all individual financial contributions
  • Board of Directors Support
  • Meet individually with each board member quarterly
  • Recommend agenda items to board chair and co-lead BOD meetings
  • Provide updates on critical issues and strategic plan initiatives/goals during BOD meetings and in monthly ED report emails
  • Recruit and provide guidance to new BOD members in accordance with bylaws
  • Financial Management
  • Draft budget for BOD approval
  • Manage budget in collaboration with non-profit CPA firm, including managing expenses, check requests, and outgoing disbursements, reviewing financial reports, and reporting updates to board treasurer and BOD
  • Donate Life America
  • Attend the DLA Annual Conference
  • Serve as the Donate Life State Team Leader for NC, adhering to DLA’s State Team Guidelines
  • Collaborate with Secondary State Team Leader to facilitate communication between DLA and the State Team (DLNC BOD)
  • Other duties as applicable

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-10 years of experience in non-profit management
  • Legislative experience preferred

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Resident of North Carolina (or within 30 minutes of state border)
  • Maintain a high degree of personal initiative, interpersonal communication, public speaking skills, and a collaborative attitude for interacting with Ambassadors, DMV personnel, DLNC staff, and BOD
  • Ability to cope with issues pertaining to death is essential
  • Must be able to manage multiple consecutive projects with strong attention to detail

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work from a home office with the ability to travel to in-state meetings
  • Annual national travel for conference attendance
