Celebrate 20 years of the donor registry at the Gift of Life Gala April 18!

Thank You for Asking the Question: Corey's Story

Dear DMV Personnel,

My son, Corey, was a tall, handsome young man with rosy cheeks and a smile that would melt your heart. He loved to play basketball with his friends, write poetry, create music beats, hunt, fish, and spend time with family. I've learned now that he was also a master of pranks. Some of his videos are on YouTube, and I can still hear him laughing now.

You asked my son if would he like to register as an organ donor at age 16 when he applied for his first driver’s license. His reply was: “Yes ma'am. I'm not going to need my organs when I die and go to Heaven. Let them help someone else.” Little could I imagine just three short years later my Corey would pass away and fulfill his decision to donate his organs. He was able to save four people others through his gifts of life.

I continue to advocate for organ donation both to raise awareness and to keep my Corey’s memory alive. Every day we continue to celebrate Corey's life, not measured by the duration but by his unselfish decision to donate. I want to thank you for asking my Corey and others: "Would you like to register as an organ donor?" so others can help extend lives here in North Carolina and beyond.

Regards,

Angie Mitchell, donor mother
